sense

i was just thinking
of our five senses
seeing
hearing
smelling
tasting
touching
which ones do you pay attention to the most?
which one, if something happened in relation to it, would you most easily ignore?
which ones do you ignore most of the time, and which ones do you pick up effortlessly...

for me
sight is the dominant sense
i see things, a single flash catches my eye
i remember things by pictures and movement, shape
i think in forms, objects or streams that move
which is also thanks to my second best sense, touch
by shutting either of them out i can concentrate fully on the other
they dance hand in hand
i feel and see
i see and feel

you know the msn alerts? i shut the sound off. cause the orange flashes at the bottom of the screen are always enough to get my attention. plus the sound is annoying XD

and yes
i ignore sound the most
cause when i read or concentrate on something
i automatically shut off everything i don't need
and sound, well there's a lot of unnecessary sound usually
(like the whirring of the fans or the tapping of keys)
i don't focus on sound so much
it doesn't come as naturally as the others...

and in a way the thoughts in my brain are so loud that they can drown out any sound effortlessly as well...

smell and taste
for me i think that these two are intricately related
if you pinched your nose while eating everything would taste weird
you need to smell to taste? perhaps

smell is the most subtle of all the senses
it creeps upon you
around you
before you know it it's there
each place you go to has a smell
but sometimes you don't notice it
until you smell it somewhere else as well
and you go "wait... i know this smell..."
it's like a subconscious record
of every place, person, thing you've known
it's so hidden and calm
but when you think about it it's so distinct, and clear...

like the smell of the art room, and the smell of kylie, and the smell of books...

taste
though it's mostly only used when we're eating
it's this that allows us to realise the beauty
of a homecooked meal, a fresh pie from the oven, a roast turkey
whatever.
and indeed it can be sharpened,
to know the most detailed of things
(this cake contains flour, egg, sugar, icing sugar, a pinch of cinnamon and was baked in an oven that previously made apple tarts...)
and how we all have our preferences as to what we like to taste
sugar in your tea? fries with ketchup.
how a bite of perfection can make you feel like you're in heaven
or bring back memories of a night sitting at a bus stop with some friends
a long time ago
it's a very sentimental sense
like smell
it's interesting that way...

i need more sound in my life
i need to listen to it more
i listen to music that i have on my com
but that's not the kind i'm looking for
it's things like voices and hums and the dropping of a pin

the difference between people's footsteps
slow and steady, fast, light, loud...

so
sight, touch, smell, taste, hearing
they let us see the world
like windows
which ones have we forgotten to look at?
